The Maytag dryer repair

If it makes a thumping sound:

Warning: Always unplug the unit first before fixing the problem, and you need to have basic appliance and electrical repair background experience.

If this dryer is used for a long time, it will make a hitting or thumping sound. This may happen because of the dryer tumbler screw loosening up.

This screw holds the dryer tight, and over time the plastic will blow out, causing the screw to edge backwards. The screw then scrapes the metal frame on every rotation of the drum. You need to replace it to fix the problem.

For access to the screw, you need to lift the front and the top. If you don’t see the screw at first glance, try rotating the drum. Do this slowly until you see the loose screw. Remove the loosened screw, and replace it with a new one.

If the dryer does not start

If it does not start you may have a faulty thermal fuse. The fuse fails and the dryer overheats. These are the parts that may have been causing the problem:

1.            Grounded heater element

2.            Clogged dryer vent

3.            Vent hose kinked

4.            Lint filter clogged

You should narrow down which part has a problem. For Maytag units, you need to remove the lint filter and lint filter housing. You need to remove the screws around it to have access to the thermal fuse. The voltmeter will confirm if the fuse is bad. You should test the continuity or resistance.

If you have fixed the issue that damaged the fuse, replace it and reassemble the dryer. You should have extra caution in reassembly, especially with the dryer vent hose.

Testing and diagnosing the dryer door switch

The inner part of your door frame has a door switch. The dryer will not start while the door is open.

The door switch can fail because of continued use. The actuator breaks off, and the door never activates the switch. There are instances where clothing gets caught on the actuator and breaks the door switch.

The voltmeter will verify the proper functioning of the actuator. Once the voltmeter is in your hands, test the switch for continuity and resistance. If the door switch has continuity, it is in a closed position.

Access to the door switch differs depending on the model. You just need to read the manual to check where the screws are located, and how to open them up. For example, in conventional dryers, it will be screwed in with two small Phillips screws.  You may also read Maytag Washing Machines for more information about this topic.
